Walking to School

It was only one year. My Kindergarten year and yes in the winter I walked uphill both ways in the snow. It was different in the late ‘70’s. My dad was working nights and sleeping and there was my three younger siblings’ mom was taking care of. So, off I went, it was probably half a mile to get to school, and our group had to cross a major road to get there with the help of the crossing guard.

There was a blind hill where we had to cross so it was scary every day. This crossing guard walked out with the stop sign and the bright yellow vest and helped up cross. There isn’t a lot I remember about those times, I fell and scraped my knee on the way but brushed it off so I could catch up with the big kids. Before school started the next year my mom told me my brother that we were riding the bus. That was a new adventure.

Thinking back through the generations of kids going to school, times have changed. Parents walk their kids to the bus stop or to school. There are more parents taking kids to school. Does that make our parents bad parents? I don’t believe so. Times were different then. Sure, we knew about stranger danger but that is all my family told us.

Try to think back to your Kindergarten year and how you got to school.
